What Is a Co-op?

A co-op is a business owned by the people who shop there and care about its future.

Hampden Park Co-op belongs to its members and is rooted in the neighborhood we serve. We work to support local growers, small producers, fair trade, sustainably grown food, and products made with care for people and the environment.

Everyone is welcome to shop at the co-op. Becoming an owner is a way to have a voice, support the store, and help keep it strong for the community.

Our Core Values

Local. Small Producer. Cooperatively Owned.

The Seven Cooperative Principles

1. Voluntary and Open Membership

Co-ops are open to everyone who is willing to accept the responsibilities of ownership, without discrimination.

2. Democratic Member Control

Owners have a voice in the future of the co-op. Each ownership receives one vote in elections and major governance decisions.

3. Member Economic Participation

Owners contribute to the co-op's success and share in its long-term growth and stability.

4. Autonomy and Independence

Co-ops are independent organizations governed by their owners and guided by cooperative values.

5. Education, Training, and Information

We believe in sharing knowledge and providing opportunities for learning—for owners, employees, and our wider community.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Co-ops are stronger when we work together. We collaborate with other cooperative businesses to support shared goals and strengthen the cooperative movement.

7. Concern for Community

We are committed to supporting the long-term health and vitality of our neighborhood through responsible business practices and community engagement.

These principles help make co-ops different from traditional businesses. They encourage local ownership, democratic participation, and a commitment to people and place.

At Hampden Park Co-op, this means investing in relationships, supporting local farmers and makers, creating meaningful employment opportunities, and helping build a more resilient food system for our community.

Every purchase, every membership, and every connection helps strengthen a cooperative that exists to serve its neighbors.
